Natural park Sierra Espadán

The natural area of Sierra Espadán was declared Natural Park on September 29th, 1998.

Among the 19 municipalities involved, 11 cover all its municipal area within the boundaries of the Natural Park. These are Aín, Alcudia de Veo, Almedijar, Azuébar, Chóvar, Eslida, Fuentes de Ayodar, Higueras, Pavías, Torralba del Pinar and Villamalur, while the 8 municipalities remaining –Alfondeguilla, Algimia de Almonacid, Artana, Ayódar, Matet, Sueras, Tales and Vall de Almonacid) only are partially included in the Natural Park’s area.

The Natural Park of Sierra de Espadán is located south of the province of Castellón, in the foothills of the Iberian Mountain range, and is one of the best preserved natural areas throughout the entire Valencian Community.

Sierra de Espadán is a great mountainous massif with a huge number of sources, fresh ravines and leafy forests of cork oaks. Located in the regions of Alto Mijares, Alto Palancia and La Plana Baixa, it runs between the basins of the rivers Mijares and Palancia.

The area declared as Natural Park covers 31,180 ha. Its high dimensions make it one of the largest Protected Natural Areas of the Valencian Community.
